Barnyard Millet Khichdi with Masoor Dal
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup Barnyard millet
- 1/2 cup masoor dal (red lentils)
- 3 cups water
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 2 green chilies, slit
- 1/2 inch ginger, grated
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
- Chopped coriander leaves for garnish
Instructions
1. Rinse and drain the barnyard millet and masoor dal under cold water.
2. Heat oil or ghee in a pressure cooker. Add cumin seeds and cook until they splutter.
3. Add ginger, green chili, and onion to the cooker. Sauté the onions until they are golden brown.
4. Dice the tomatoes and add them to the cooker. Cook until the tomatoes are mushy.
5. Add turmeric powder, barnyard millet, and masoor dal to the cooker. Stir well to combine.
6. Add water and salt to the cooker. Mix everything together.
7. Cover and cook on medium heat for 3-4 whistles.
8. Once cooking is complete, let the pressure release naturally. Garnish with finely chopped coriander leaves before serving.
